Every operations team should have the kind of internal tooling that used to be reserved for companies with a platform department — sized to the problem, and owned by the team that uses it.

What that looks like in practice is unglamorous. Most automation work is hard not because the logic is hard, but because the real environment is messier than the proposal assumed — the upstream system changes its export format, a site loses connectivity for two days, every client wants a slightly different data model. We build for that: the systems we run in the field keep operating with no network at all.
